Rotimi Opens Up About Leaving G-Unit: Lack of Understanding of Afrobeats Led to Departure

In a recent interview, Nigerian-American singer and actor Rotimi shared the reasons behind his departure from 50 Cent’s G-Unit record label. According to Rotimi, the label’s head failed to grasp his unique musical style, which was rooted in Afrobeats.

At the time of his signing, Afrobeats was still an emerging genre in the United States, particularly in the West. While artists like Davido and Wizkid were gaining traction in cities like Boston and New York, the genre hadn’t yet reached mainstream status.

Rotimi recalled the conversation he had with 50 Cent, saying, “I was trying to push Afrobeats, but 50 Cent didn’t understand what it was. He was like, ‘What’s this sound you’re trying to do?’ I told him it was Afrobeats, and he didn’t get it.”

Rotimi explained that he had a record called ‘Love Rhythm’ that he believed would be a game-changer, but 50 Cent’s lack of understanding of Afrobeats made it clear that they were not on the same page. Ultimately, Rotimi decided to part ways with the label and explore other opportunities.

50 Cent, however, allowed Rotimi to leave the label, recognizing that their creative visions were no longer aligned. Rotimi went on to sign with Empire, a label that shared his passion for Afrobeats and supported his artistic direction.
