Nigeria Police Arrest Student-Teacher in Connection with Incident that Left 11-Year-Old Pupil Blind in One Eye
A 11-year-old pupil, Alao Idera, a sixth-grade student at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko, Ogun State, has lost her right eye in an unfortunate incident involving a student-teacher.
The student-teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, is a final-year student at Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijebu Ode, where she was completing her teaching practice at the school.
According to the police, Adeyemo was holding a cane in the classroom when a group of primary six pupils approached her, leading to the cane accidentally piercing the pupil’s right eye.
The injured student was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where the damaged eye was surgically removed.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola explained that Adeyemo was arrested and is currently being interrogated. Odutola clarified that the teacher did not intentionally flog the student, nor did the student do anything wrong.
According to Odutola, the teacher was simply preparing for an end-of-year party and was holding a cane, as teachers often do. However, when the student rushed towards her, the cane accidentally caused injury to the student’s eye.
The student underwent surgery at the Federal Medical Centre, where her right eye was removed. In a shocking turn of events, the teacher attempted to take her own life after realizing the severity of the injury, but was rushed to the hospital and is currently stable.
