Crystal Palace’s Captain, Marc Guehi, Escapes Punishment for Wearing Controversial Armband
Crystal Palace’s captain, Marc Guehi, has been let off the hook by the Football Association (FA) after donning a rainbow armband for the second time this season. The accessory in question features a message that reads “Jesus loves you”, significantly different from the one used in his previous display, which bore the inscription “I love Jesus”.
However, the message on the latest armband still contravenes the Premier League’s strict kit regulations, which prohibit religious messages on players’ equipment. The FA sent a reminder to Guehi and his club regarding this rule following the initial incident during a match against Newcastle United.
Despite the apparent breach, the FA has decided not to take any disciplinary action against the 24-year-old defender, according to reports from the PA news agency. This development comes as no surprise, given the current momentum surrounding the Rainbow Laces campaign, a joint effort by the Premier League and the LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall to promote inclusivity and support in football and society.
As the Rainbow Laces campaign enters its conclusive stage, with its next matches scheduled for Thursday, it’s highly unlikely that Guehi will wear another rainbow armband for the remainder of the season.
