Serena Williams Addresses Rumors About Her Skin Tone, Says She Never Bleached
During a recent Instagram Live session, tennis superstar Serena Williams took the time to address speculation that had been circulating about her skin tone. At 43 years old, the renowned athlete has never shied away from sharing her authenticity and confidence, and this time was no exception.
In a bold and direct manner, Williams responded to the whispers about her lighter complexion. She emphasized that it wasn’t a result of bleaching her skin, saying, “I do not bleach my skin, no. Not for all you haters out there!” The video that sparked the commotion showed Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, attending their daughter Olympia’s school play.
According to Williams, the subtle difference in her skin tone could be attributed to the play of lighting, as well as the makeup she wore on the occasion. “There’s a thing called sunlight, and in that sunlight, you get different colors,” she explained.
A passionate advocate for self-acceptance, Williams proudly asserted, “I’m a dark Black woman, and I love who I am and how I look. That’s just not my thing.” While she understands that others may choose to practice skin-lightening techniques, she emphasized that this decision was not hers to make.
“If people do it, that’s their thing, and they have every opportunity, and they should,” Williams said. “I don’t judge. But no, I don’t bleach my skin. So can we just kind of clear that up?” This clarifying statement left many supporters relieved and reassured, with some commenters defending her and suggesting that her appearance could be due to lighting or her profession (she has retired from playing tennis after a distinguished 23 Grand Slam singles titles).
The video featured a more golden-toned lighting that enhanced her natural beauty. Furthermore, the golden hues in her bathroom’s wallpaper at home also contributed to her skin tone’s variations, she shared.
Serena Williams has had an incredible tennis career, winning an impressive 23 Grand Slam singles titles before her final match at the 2022 US Open. Post-retirement, she has continued to stay involved in public life, sharing glimpses of her personal and family life on social media with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and their two daughters, Olympia and Adira.
