The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued a warning to financial institutions regarding severe penalties for failing to address the ongoing cash scarcity at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

Naijawebinfo reports that the CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, made this announcement during the annual Bankers’ Dinner hosted by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

This warning follows widespread reports of cash shortages at both ATMs and bank counters.

In response to the issue, Cardoso stated, “We are aware of the persistent challenges with cash availability at ATMs, which heavily impact everyday Nigerians. To tackle this, we are conducting spot checks on deposit money banks and will penalize institutions that fail to meet expectations.”

He also announced that, effective December 1, 2024, customers experiencing difficulties withdrawing cash at ATMs or bank branches can report such issues directly to the CBN through dedicated phone lines and email addresses provided for each state.
