Tinubu’s Administration May Face Third Protest in a Year Over Dele Farotimi’s Arrest
Naijawebinfo reported that human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi was arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command on Tuesday, allegedly for defaming Afe Babalola in his book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.”
The arrest sparked widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, activists, and opposition politicians. Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar criticized the police’s misuse of power in a civil matter.
According to human rights lawyer Effiong Inibehe, Farotimi was denied bail during his trial on Wednesday, despite being a lawyer and the alleged offense being bailable. Inibehe argued that Farotimi may not receive a fair trial in Ekiti State.
“The refusal to grant Farotimi bail has heightened concerns about his ability to receive a fair trial in Ekiti State,” Inibehe said. “As a Magistrate Court, it’s standard practice to grant bail to defendants, especially in civil matters.”
Inibehe questioned the Magistrate’s decision to adjourn the case to December 10, 2024, and insist on a formal written application for bail. “What’s the basis for this unusual request, especially given Farotimi’s profession as a lawyer?” he asked.
Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, has called for a protest on December 10 to demand Farotimi’s unconditional release. Sowore emphasized that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and urged Nigerians to join the protest.
The protest will take place at various locations, including Lagos, Abuja, Ekiti, and London. Nigerians are urged to join the movement and demand justice for Farotimi.
